What Is Software Engineering

What Is Software Engineering

According to Barry Boehm, software engineering is: A practical application of scientific knowledge in the design and construction of computer programs and the associated documentation required to develop, operate, and maintain them. IEEE describes it as: a systematic approach to the development, operation, maintenance, and retirement of software. And Stephen Schach explains software engineering as: a discipline whose aim is the production of quality software, software that is delivered on time, within budget, and that satisfies its requirements.

We select to use a blend of the preceding definitions to reflect the viewpoint of the software project manager: Software engineering is a disciplined, systematic approach to the development, operation, maintenance, and retirement of software through the practical application of scientific knowledge and processes.
