Tracking Product Quality - Monitoring the Quality of an Evolving Product

Product Competency 10:

Tracking Product Quality - Monitoring the Quality of an Evolving Product

Quality of product is the responsibility of the whole development team and of all the stakeholders. The project manager is responsible for putting the processes in place to monitor the product's quality as it develops through its life cycle. The task, "Identify Quality Improvement Needs" may be seen in "what is a phase" figure under "Software Quality Management". Because it takes place during multiple development phases, it is one of various "integral tasks".

"Software Quality Assurance" gives the foundations of quality improvement as they relate to project execution. The following topics will be covered: defining quality, its characteristics, and measures; understanding a brief history of the quality movement - Shewhart, Deming, Juran, and Crosby; understanding important quality concepts - continuous improvement and the Deming control circle plan-do-check-act (PDCA); managing change - being a change agent; implementing software quality; and becoming familiar with software industry problems.

Software Quality Assurance (SQA) will be covered, focusing on: describing software quality, tracking process quality, tracking product quality, understanding assessment processes, and assuring the quality (preparing quality assurance assessment instruments and becoming familiar with the IEEE SQA plan).
